Did You Know?

Knowing these words is not necessary at all. 

         However knowing them may be interesting to those who are driven by the passion to enrich their vocabulary.

So here is the list-

1. The cry of a new born baby is called 'vagitus'.

2. The space between your eyebrows is called 'glabella'.

3. The little toe or finger is called 'minimus'.

4. The sick feeling that you get after eating and drinking too much is called 'crapulence'.

5. The space between your nostrils is called 'columella nasi'.

6. The sheen of light that you see when you close your eyes and press your hands on them is called 'phosphenes'.

7. When your stomach rumbles, that's 'wamble'.

8. Finding it difficult to get out of bed in the morning is called 'dysania'.

9. The space just below the columella nasi is covered by the ridge called philtral ridge.

10. The plastic or metallic coating at the end of your shoe laces is called 'aglet'.

11. The tiny plastic thing placed in the middle of a pizza box is called a 'box tent'.

12. The way it smells after it rains is called 'petrichor'.

13. When you combine a question mark with an exclamation mark (?!) it's called 'interrobang'.

14. The wired cage that holds the cork on a bottle is called an 'agraffe'.

15. The meaningless words like na, na, na or la, la, la in the lyric of any song are called 'vocables'.

16. The metal thing used to measure your feet at the shoe store is called 'Bannock Device'.

17. The dot over an "i" or "j" is called 'tittle'.

18. The illegible handwriting is called 'griffonage'.

19. The day after tomorrow is called 'overmorrow'.

20. The prongs of a fork are called 'tines'.

21. When we use vulgar words out of stress or pain or failure to release our bad feelings about them it's 'lalochezia'.

22. When you show rude confidence about what is the wrong use of a word or its pronunciation it's the sign of lukoptia.

23. That deceiving any one with the move contrary to one's apprehension is called 'feint'.

24. Snollygoster is a person who is without any principles in his dealings with anyone. His only principle is opportunism.

25. Accimus- is a pretentious behaviour of someone when outwardly s/he doesn't show interest in a person, thing or event but inwardly very keen to know these without being exposed.

न्याय के रूप में ख्यात कुछ लोकरूढ़ नीतिवाक्य

आम बोलचाल में तो नहीं किन्तु विद्वतमंडली में शास्त्रचर्चा के समय अपने तर्क के समर्थन में अथवा किसी विषय विशेष पर अपना आग्रह, समानता, दृष्टांत या निदर्शना हेतु कतिपय लोकरूढ़ नीतिवाक्य की सहायता ली जाती है। ऐसे हीं कुछ लोकरूढ़ नीतिवाक्यों को पाठकों के प्रसंगानुकूल उपयोग के लिए संग्रह करके नीचे रखा गया है। १. अंधचटकन्याय : जब अपात्र व्यक्ति को कुछ कीमती वस्तु अनायास प्राप्त हो जाता है तो हम सहसा हीं कह बैठते हैं - अंधे के हाथ बटेर लग गया। अंधचटकन्याय यही है। २. अंधपरम्परान्याय :- जब लोग बिना विचारे दूसरों का अंधानुकरण करने लगते हैं। ३. अरूंधती दर्शनन्याय - ज्ञात से अज्ञात का पता लगाना। ४. अशोकवनिका न्याय - रावण ने सीता को अशोक वाटिका में रखा था, परन्तु उसने और स्थानों को छोड़ इसी वाटिका में क्यों रक्खा, इसका कोई विशेष कारण नहीं बताया जा सकता। अर्थात सारांश यह कि जब मनुष्य के पास किसी कार्य को सम्पन्न करने के अनेक साधन प्राप्त हों, तो यह उसकी अपनी इच्छा है कि वह चाहे किसी साधन को अपना ले। ऐसी अवस्था में किसी भी साधन को अपनाने का कोई विशेष कारण नहीं दिया जा सकता। ५. अश्मलोष्टन्याय -...

भावग्राही जनार्दनः

जीवनपर्यंत हम कुछ न कुछ करते हीं रहते हैं. यह भी सच है कि कुछ किये बिना रह भी नहीं सकते. प्राणयात्रा से लेकर शारीरिक यात्रा भी बिना कर्म किये असम्भव है. कहना अतिशयोक्ति नहीं होगा कि स्वार्थ से लेकर परमार्थ तक हमारी सारी गतिविधियां प्रायः स्वयं को केन्द्र में रखकर ही होती है. किन्तु ईश्वर को हमारे इन कर्मों से कोई मतलब नहीं है.  उनको यदि सरोकार है तो हमारी उन क्रियाओं के पीछे छुपे भाव से. वे ये भी नहीं देखते कि उन्हें भजने वाला मूरख है या विद्वान. वे तो केवल प्रेम देखते हैं, भावना देखते हैं,समर्पण देखते हैं. तभी एक श्लोक है कि व्याकरणज्ञान से रहित कोई मूर्ख शुद्धश्रद्धाभावेन 'विष्णवे नमः' के बदले 'विष्णाय नमः' का भी पाठ करे तो फल की दृष्टि से कोई अंतर नहीं होगा; कारण भगवान् क्रियाग्राही हैं ही नहीं, वे तो भावग्राही ठहरे. मूर्खो वदति विष्णाय धीरो वदति विष्णवे। तयोः फलं तुल्यं हि भावग्राही जनार्दनः।। वे तो इतने भावग्राही हैं कि प्रेमपूर्वक अर्पित पत्र, पुष्प, फल वा जल को खा तक लेते है. इसे देखने का न तो हममें सामर्थ्य है न हीं सारग्राहिणी-सूक्ष्मदर्शिणी बुद्धि. पत्...
