25 years of serving.
25 years is a period that matters. I am saying this because yesterday;that is 25 years ago on the 26 th of August, all of the 40th batch of the Bihar Administrative Service were born after undergoing through parturition-pain like pangs of unemployment for most of us.
Keeping in view the importance of this eventful date of 25 th milestone in our service career our colleagues decided not to let this milestone go unnoticed for understable reasons.
Consequently we assembled to showcase our "एकजुटता "by way of a simple get-together with our family to commemorate and celebrate through revelling, eating, singing and gossiping.
All did that which they were best at.
As far as I am concerned I consider myself best at eating. My eating talent multiplies with the variety of food on the table.
यत्र-यत्र भोजनम् तत्र-तत्र राजीवम्.
In short,we were trying to re-live the moments of 1997 by the way we could.
****************************************************
Though we belonged to the same batch we happened to meet some of the members for the first time in our service career.
It didn't surprise us because we all know the nature of our service which is, generally speaking,a field based service where chances of meeting each other is only few and far between.
It also did not surprise us that we found most of us out of shape in terms of bulging belly and grey hair;though all of us denied having these. They had made their best efforts to conceal their belly-borne & white-hair appearances through tightening their waist by belt and colouring the hair by dye. Of course there were still some who didn't need to have such contrivances.
They were smart people in terms of mind as well as body and of course spirit.
Spirit!-Oh;not in that sense which is usually popular elsewhere but banned in Bihar.
****************************************************
A poem recited by a colleague, perhaps composed by herself, made us feel the moments of 1997.
This was the year after which we set out in different directions of the field to serve & learn together.
The people technically call this "probation period" that still continues for me as far as I am concerned. Each day is a new day of learning, observing, doing and most importantly serving.
****************************************************
You can't say that your journey of learning,be it in service or otherwise, comes to an end at any time. It is lifelong. In any case it is our experience that is our best master and guide as well. The quality of experience of all the members,I felt, varied in accordance with proportion in the mix of success-setbacks in their service.
However, whether it is success or setback; much depends upon how you interpret them.
A better place of posting and coveted posts have always been a point of attraction in any service and for that matter ours' is no exception. Some got it by chance;some by design of sorts and still there were some who didn't get it at all throughout their career. But that didn't impede their zeal to serve.
One thing is certain, the path of duty, though mostly rough and bumpy yet sometimes unexpectedly smooth also, was full of challenges.
**************************************************
We are the people who have 25 years of experience of doing stupendous tasks of relief- work,
elections, census, disaster management, revenue & development-welfare administration along with critically important tasks of maintenance of law and order, performance of quasi-judicial duty besides office management & administration and a lot more.
This, for the "thoughtful ones" engaged in other services, may be a matter of envy.
The nature of the service that we are in, provides ample opportunity to serve the people on whatever post you hold.
Each and every member of this service,in course of compliance of the requirements of this service, becomes a generalist with a moving repository of knowledge & spectrum of chequered experience combined together.
This distinguishes "service", especially "public service", from "Job".
And this is the USP of this service to say the least. This stands it out amidst an array of other Services.
May each passing day make ourselves more capable to serve with commitment, passion and compassion.
Congratulations.
R.R.Prabhakar.
