Reverse Learning

It's not that you make your children learn from you; the reverse is also a possibility for quite a few times.

This possibility of reverse learning keeps on increasing when your son or daughter,in the course of their studies or job, happens to live away from you.

 What is needed is to befriend them in such a way that your children don't feel uncomfortable to share their experiences with you.

I suppose your children, by virtue of their remaining away from you for the above mentioned reason, have a greater opportunity to meet people of different age groups, of different backgrounds,of different parts of the state/country/world which you might not have had when in that age or even the present phase of your life.

The youth of today are not only exposed to more territories of field or knowledge, more regions, more communication, more facilities, more opportunities but also of course more problems than those youths of our times. 

In order to get benefited through this process of reverse learning you only need to engage with your son or daughter in such a way that the conversation well goes beyond normal parental inquiry like “ how is study going?” or “how was your performance last semester?” or “why were your marks or grade so poor?’’ etc. etc.

 I, by habit, talk to my daughter who is pursuing her masters in Delhi, about the people, students, professors and the environment she stands exposed to by virtue of her studies there.

 In this way I get to know through her the ideas, opinions, views and visions of theirs hailing from different backgrounds, culture etc. 

It's through her that I got to know that in her university (where students from different parts of the state and also quite a few parts of the world stay to study) she has not been able to find a single student from Gujarat.

         Why? She left me guessing to find any rational answer. 

Probably Gujarati are the lot who are more interested in business than pursuing higher education.

 I feel education is a dire necessity for lower and middle income groups for the simple reason that it serves, generally speaking, as a "job provider" for them.

As far as the higher income group is concerned; education especially higher education is a matter of choice for them. 

 Degrees earned by them have more decoratory purpose than it being a source of livelihood or medium of eking out their living from it.

It's through her that I got to know about professors here who teach according to their expertise and whims, not according to the need of the students or subject or syllabus.

 It's through her that I got to know that her university is a place where there is an overdose of liberty to the extent that any change is viewed with suspicion and followed by protest as a matter of first response.

 Conversation with her has always revealed some interesting things about the place and people there. 

It's mostly because of her nature which is more observing than participating.

Today she spoke to me about a foreign student of this university who was sharing his experience in public about the Bihari in general and Bihari student in particular.

 A foreign student speaking in Hindi with foreign accent sharing his experience & feelings about a Bihari made one and all, particularly Bihari students present in the gathering,listen to him with great interest.

   उसका कहना था कि-

१. यदि आप बिहार से हो तो यह आपके मेहनती होने का “ए” ग्रेड सर्टिफिकेट है.

२.यदि आप बिहार से हो तो किसी को यह मान लेने में कोई हर्ज नहीं होना चाहिए कि आप कोई भी बाधा आपके इरादे को कमज़ोर नहीं कर सकता है. 

३.अभाव से लड़ना और लड़कर जीत हासिल कर लेना हर एक बिहारी का यूएसपी है. 

४.यदि आप बिहार से हो तो दूसरे से मदद की उम्मीद बहुत कम रखते हैं चाहे दूसरा कोई बिहारी हीं क्यों न हो!

५. बिहारी एक दूसरे को बिहारी होने के आधार पर नहीं बल्कि स्वजातीय होने पर मदद करना पसंद करते हैं.

६.यदि आप बिहार से हो तो इसकी सम्भावना बहुत कम है कि आप कोई क्षेत्रीय आधार पर कोई बिहारी एसोसिएशन बना लें जबकि देश के दूसरे राज्यों के लोग ऐसा तुरंत कर लेते हैं.

 बिहारी स्टुडेंट के बारे में उसकी जो धारणा थी वह भी कुछ कम रोचक नहीं था.

He continued -

चाहे उसे उसके लिए शहर के एक छोटे से कमरे में अपने चौकी के आधे हिस्से में किताब- कापी रखकर क्यों न सोना पड़े और दोनों टाइम का एक हीं बार दाल-भात चोखा बना कर क्यों न खाना पड़े नौकरी तो ले हीं लेना है.

 (नोट-*"दाल-भात चोखा" को बिहारी विद्यार्थी दूसरे प्रदेशों के छात्रों के सामने अपनी हालत को बेवजह एक्सपोज नहीं करने की खातिर "DBC dish" कहता है ताकि कोई समझे या न समझे)

बिहारी स्टुडेंट चाहे वह स्टुडेंट लाइफ में किसी स्ट्रीम का स्टुडेंट क्यों न रहा हो,सिरीयस पढ़ाई किया हो या केजुअली वह एक बार यूपीएससी सिविल सर्विस की परीक्षा में बैठता ज़रूर है वरना वह स्टुडेंट कहलाने लायक हीं नहीं.  

यदि वह यूपीएससी फोड़ देता है तब तो उसकी इज़्ज़त का क्या कहना!

 यदि फुस्स भी हो जाता है तब भी यह टैग उसके साथ लग जाता है कि उसने भी सिविल सर्विस की परीक्षा दी थी जिसमें वह “थोड़े से मार्क्स से हीं” रह गया था.  

समय के साथ यह “थोड़े से मार्क्स से हीं” “बहुत-बहुत थोड़े से मार्क्स” में बदल जाता है.

 चाहे आप बाद में यूनिवर्सिटी के नाम नामी-गिरामी प्रोफेसर बन गये हों या हाई स्कूल का कोई टीचर या बैंक का कैशियर या पीओ या फिर किसी स्टेट सिविल सर्विस में सेकेंड क्लास अफसर; आपका अपने कलीग या बाबू लोगों के बीच अपना “अतीत”और “ज्ञान” को बघाड़ना आपको आनंदित करता है ताकि बाद में आपके स्टुडेंट,कलीग या मुलाजिम कहें-सर/साहब अपने स्टुडेंट लाइफ में बहुत जीनियस थे. “दू-दू बार यूपीएससी का इन्टरव्यू दे चुके हैं” 

यह बात अलग है कि आप शायद पीटी भी न क्वालिफाई किये हों.

मानो यूपीएससी सिविल सर्विस का इंटरव्यू फेस करना उसका एक एक्स्ट्रा क्वालिफिकेशन हो!

इसलिए मैं कहता हूं प्रत्येक बिहारी स्टुडेंट को यूपीएससी परीक्षा में ज़रूर बैठना चाहिए वह बैठता भी है.

यह कहकर उस विदेशी छात्र ने अपनी बात समाप्त की तो सभी बिहारी उसे हैरत से देख रहे थे.

I asked my daughter how come that foreign student got to know such finer attributes of a Bihari in general and Bihari student in particular?

She was clueless.

But I guessed and told her- ज़रूर उसका हाॅस्टल में रूम पार्टनर कोई बिहारी रहा होगा.
