एकान्त

एकान्त
******
Apropos of एकान्त our ancient sages prescribed for the purification and rejuvenation of the soul.

It is neither “isolation”, nor “loneliness”, nor even “solitude”.

It is नेति नेति नेति — “not this, not this, not even this.”

It is not a retreat born of melancholy, seeking refuge in some alcove from the challenges hurled by the world.

Then what is it?

It is एकान्त — a state for which English perhaps has no perfect equivalent capable of conveying the full range of meanings contained in its quiver.

The experiencers of एकान्त testify that—

i) It is the intrinsic need of the self to immerse itself, from time to time, into the self itself, in order to bring forth a renewed self from within.

ii) It is an endeavour enabling one to explore, introspect, and retrospect.
It is the meeting of one with oneself.

iii) It is both a process and an event through which an individual regains his true worth after having been devalued by incessant interaction with the outer world.

iv) It enables one to perceive the enemy in disguise — conceit and hubris born of accolades and appreciation.

v) It is the vessel into which everyone must dip himself, as though bathing in it, to emerge refreshed and ready once again to confront the challenges of the external world.

All that appears to be good, great is the product of एकान्त, be that a good philosophy, or great thought or great invention or for that matter even miraculous feat that this outside world hails is the outcome of एकान्त.

Thus, while words such as “isolation” and “loneliness” carry deep shades of negativity, and even “solitude” does not fully escape that shadow, एकान्त, on the contrary, is something affirmative and empowering from within. It is also a remedy for the soul-corroding pursuits into which the outside world compels us to plunge in more ways than one.
