Worry: The Killer-in-Chief

There is no person known to me who is worryless all the time.  Of course the reasons for worries are different among people. Central to all the types of worry is apprehension that the consequences may be otherwise.
All negative thoughts of jealousy and hatred, regret over past, fear and anxiety for the future may either be a cause or effect of worry. Worry is thus a kind of thinking quite distinct from constructive thinking or mind wandering.
By all Standards of Measurements or Analysis worry is a dysfunctionality. It acts as a depressant, diminishes our vitality and virility to take the bull by its horn. It is a leakage of energy wasted by way of negative indulgence of our mental activity. It kills our confidence-a precious asset for all having something positive to do with themselves. Hence it is the Killer-in-Chief.
Before exploring ways and means to do away this Killer-in-Chief, it would be relevant to know the types of worry that set in our psyche created by the circumstances we either build by ignorance or face by providence.
A. Certain circumstances are our own creations. We ignore the right path and adopt wrong ones only to invite worry. I ask why should a person not worry if he absents himself from duty without any permission? Under the situation described above the moment we remove ourselves from the work place anxiety sets in for valid reasons of getting noticed and penalized etc. Ignoring studies throughout the years and then worrying about the results belong to this category. In such cases worrying is likened to super stupidity. If you succeed in getting through thank your luck to say the least.
B. In quite some other cases the circumstances are thrust upon us to be faced or encountered. In that case our role in the creation of the circumstances is zilch. In such cases worrying arises when we feel  unequal to the task we are supposed to perform under the said overwhelming circumstances. Sudden happening of an event having the potential to affect and harm us in near, immediate or distant future comes in this category. We must realize that worrying about the consequences is of little help. It is our own poise and patience that is of immense help at the time. At this critical moment we must do the needful to preserve it as a precious possession.
How to kill worry.
The following lines towards conquest of worry are by no means prescriptive though it may appear to be so. Nevertheless they do contain therein certain suggestions meant to help us if appreciated in right perspective.
    *  Work yourself upon building an equanimity of mind-(Thought Control Exercise)
A little reflection will show that there is no advantage whatever in crying over spilt milk, in regretting things you cannot help-mistakes, misfortune and blunders, opportunity missed, disgrace/humiliation/ignominy suffered.
So we should continuously attempt to build our disposition of such a nature that does not let us lose our balance. One writer has well said :"Sow a thought you reap an act. Sow an act you reap a habit. Sow a habit you reap a character. Sow a character and you reap a destiny."
A man's thoughts have a profound influence upon his entire life. Every scheme before it takes shape in reality appears as an idea and whether the scheme is sound, mainly depends on the quality of thinking which went into its production. Moreover, our thoughts largely make us what we are here and hereafter.
Hence avoid being pensive. Learn to see the bright spot in the dark no matter how limitless the latter may appear to be. In short be realistically optimistic. If you have developed a habit of seeing a thing in different angle in time of emergency or criticality, a bright spec is bound to get detected by you even in the most trying or militating circumstances.
* Keep yourself busy (even for nothing!)
Keeping busy is the cheapest kind of medicine on this earth and one of the best. Even relentlessly engaging in the routine work/task works  miracles to keep worry at a bay. Work is excellent antidote to worry.
When mind is overwhelmed by worry make a choice of doing a thing or work of routine nature with best sincerity. Slowly you will find that magnitude and intensity of worry falls beyond it being painful. At least the headache shall disappear if not the problem that worries you! This is the technique of substitution or diversion, by which thoughts of fear and anxiety are crowded out of mind by letting in other works or task related feelings and the like.
* Figure out the Worst.
We can banish worry by being bold enough to face the outcome that frightens us. While taking full precaution and preparation to meet the circumstances with the best wit and resources we must develop an attitude to face the eventuality. Worst possible consequences should be anticipated in advance to suffer in case we do not succeed in our endeavours. We have often heard: Everything is between Mind and Matter; if you do not mind it does not matter.
Have Faith in God

  • This is the panacea for all worries. It turns out the situation so infrequently to our pleasant surprise. we must have realized this at one, more and several occasion in the journey of our life.

Through faith in God, specially through prayer, a man can have access to vast hidden reserve of power.
Prayer is the most powerful form of energy we can generate. It has a great healing effect. It is a force as real as terrestrial gravity.
Through prayer we seek to augment our finite energy by connecting ourselves to the infinite & inexhaustible motive power that spins the universe.
With one's limited powers reinforced through prayer and faith in God, one is in a better position to meet the challenges of life where worry is just only a dysfunctional part of whole challenges.
A sound philosophy of life based on mental detachment goes a long way not only towards eradicating worry but improves the quality of life in an indescribable way.
Thus when peace of mind is strengthened by prayer and detachment the worry automatically attenuates to vanish.
